FAQs for New Gardeners #FoodAccess #COVID-19

Rebecca Newburn

Dear SeedFolks,

I've had some interesting talks with neighbors who want to start growing food who've never gardened. They wanted to plant things that aren't typically planted by seed and don't grow here well and if they grow here, aren't planted at this time of year. I had one neighbor give me a list of 12 things and all of them were a "No" for some reason or another. It really made me think that it would be great to have an FAQ for folks new to gardening. This FAQ document isn't finished. You can make comments, but can't edit it directly. There is also a helpful e-book from our local master gardeners linked at top.

I hope you can join us tonight for the seed library conversation at 6 PM PST.  Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/528170593.

Hi
Would love to hear a report from your zoom meeting,  wasn't able to make meeting.
Community Seed Exchange is packaging up our seed, we put out an online order option and sent it out to our mailing list, we have given out 1500 packets of seeds in one week!! We have a drop site for people to pick up seed, we are making sure our hands are well washed and only one or two people have done bulk of work.

warmly,
Sara in Sebastopol

Dear SeedFolks,

I made a video about safe seed packing in this time of pandemic.

We're hoping to get out a one page piece that folks can use on site to educate members about borrowing seeds safely.

Dear SeedFolks,

The food access crisis is about to get more intense and I'm truly hoping that providing seeds can support a number of our community members in being more resilient. Please check out the resources that we are developing and add to the document.

Come join us for a conversation about how to  the seed library community can support each other and the communities we serve this Thursday at 6 PM PST.

Hi Kay. Has Next Door been a successful way to promote the project? I'm a library worker in an urban/suburban area and we are going to mail seeds as well. The library is considering getting a Next Door account.
Thanks,
Laila

Hi, d.carlock! We have a really simple libguide for our seed library: https://guides.usfca.edu/seeds It has worked well for us!

Re: #websites #NewSeedLibrary #websites #NewSeedLibrary

Bythell, Barbara

I have been using a LibGuide as the website for our Seed Library at the Milwaukee Area Technical College. Here is the link
Besides these public pages, I have pages of hidden content, where I move descriptions of seeds that have all been given out. I can then re-use the description if we get seeds returned, or more donated from the vendor, in subsequent years.  I also copy the descriptions from the guide to create printed seed packet inserts, and to create a print binder that in-person users can page through when choosing seeds.
I hope this helps.
cheers,
Barbara

Keeping Seeds in the Hands of People #COVID-19 #ResilientGardens #FoodAccess

SeedLibraries.net

Dear SeedFolks,

I hope you are well. The last few weeks have been a shock on many people's lives and the larger systems that folks have relied on. Many people have more time on their hands and are interested in growing food. It would be great to come together as a community to ensure that folks have access to seeds and the knowledge of how to grow healthy food for themselves and their families.

I have created a document for us to collectively build and share resources to help people continue to share seeds even as seed libraries and our public libraries are shuttered. We need to do this thoughtfully and be informed by science to build best practices to meet this moment.  Some people are reviving the idea of victory gardens, and my invitation is that we create a larger vision. Home gardens can also support us with increasing food security, community connections, and biodiversity and are also an essential piece of climate adaptation and resilience.

Here is the shared document, Resilient Victory Gardens. This will be an experiment in sharing a document with editing privileges for such a large community. You can also comment, if you prefer that. The idea is to source from all of us the best practices. There are several protocols and signs that would be great to create to ensure that we can provide seeds to people and ensure we do it to maintain the health of all.

Besides doing seed library work and working full-time as a middle school science teacher (major redirect in 2 weeks ago as we moved learning online), I also am a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Trainer and the CERT Neighborhood Team Leader for a community of 6000 households. I need a group of seed librarians to step up to maintain this Resilient Victory Gardens document and make sure things are well formatted and vetted. We also need some leaders to step into guiding that process for the group to make sure that we had a good safe sharing protocol that will be posted at all seed sharing locations. I feel like I can best be of service by offering inspiration and structure (such as making the document). However, finding gardening resources, etc. needs to be done by the community. I hope you are inspired to step up and share things that you have found valuable. If you are able to step into an organizing / leadership role here please let the group know.

Stay safe and take good care of yourselves. Speaking of which, I am teaching several cohorts of.a program that I developed with some other CERTs called Ready Together! Organize your Block for Disaster Preparedness. The link is one of the emails that cohort members were given that they could share. It contains a lot of resources that I developed that you and your neighborhood might find valuable. Feel free to share with others.

Once again, your help and brilliance in meeting this moment is so deeply needed and appreciated. Please help add resources to the document. Let the group know if you are willing to step into a leadership role. Everyone has their part to play. :)

Peas,
Rebecca

Has anyone used Libguides for create their seed library website? Our library currently uses Libguides for our entire website and I was thinking of trying to create the seed library's site as a libguide within it. Curious to see if anyone else did this and how it has worked for you.

Hi! Thank you,
We will try our best to make the call, but in case...

I uploaded the english language version of a zine we made to the seed libraries platform. Anyone can print it and let us know if they do! I will soon upload a spanish version once translated.

Our library has gone pretty much virtual and through the mail. We put out posts to exchange seeds with others in our networks through the mail, as well as sending out to people who have written that they don't have seeds but are willing to donate to cover costs of shipping and materials like envelopes etc.
We are shipping out little boxes through priority mail mostly to our local Puerto Rico network, a few outside mostly of our diaspora. So far we have sent out to about 40 families.
Each box contains 9-10 varieties, mostly from our own collection of seeds, a few we have from exchanges in places outside the islands.
We also include a #QueNoSePierdaLaSemilla sticker. We are sending out a simple jpeg with info digitally since we do not have a printer/copier handy. Those who are sending donations are told it’s about $10 to cover shipping/material costs. People have been very willing to cooperate, and anyone who can’t pay is ok, others have contributed extra.
We are sharing some posts through our Instagram @quenosepierdalasemilla and @eldepartamentodelafood and collaborators like @reclaimseednyc

Hope this helps!
Things we need more of:
Bulk tropical/caribbean seeds
Envelopes- small manila coin or similar
Sticking labels

Anyone who has info, graphics, etc can also send our way and we will include in our library collection of educational materials.

Thanks
Tara and Lex
